Wells RFC U16 27 – 7 Gordano RFC U16
Fourteen man Wells recorded a deserved victory against Gordano in windy and wet conditions. Both the Wells back and forward divisions played at a high tempo with excellent intensity, and the result was rarely in doubt despite the imbalance in numbers.
Wells playing down the slope and against the wind in the first half, opened the scoring through a penalty from Sam Butler. This resulted from Gordano using hands in the ruck. Wells then scored a well worked try. After a significant period of pressure and several phases, the ball was passed out to inside centre Ru Duddy on the Gordano twenty two. Duddy ran a great angle, forcefully handed off the last defender and powered over the line. Butler duly converted.
Wells second try was a testimony the great effort and power of their forwards. Following a series of drives and mauls the ball was worked to Ned Lloyd Jones who carried two defenders over the line with him.
Despite the score line Gordano started to come back into the match with a period of good possession and territory. This eventually resulted in a converted try, which was also the final play of the first half. The half time score was 15-7 to Wells.
The second half continued with a similar pattern, with Wells in the ascendency despite playing up the slope. They scored two further tries. The first was following a quickly taken penalty in the Gordano twenty two. Jed Symes running at an angle, eventually going over in the corner. Wells best try of the match was then scored by Kieran Joyce. This was a great individual effort from half way, and included beating several Gordano defenders in the process, through a jinking, mazy run. Butler completed the scoring with the conversion from in front of the posts.
Tries: Ru Duddy, Ned Lloyd Jones, Jed Symes, Kieran Joyce.
Conversions: Sam Butler x2.
Penalty: Sam Butler.
