Wells rugby club can proudly call themselves champions of the South Western Counties at Level Eight of the Rugby Football hierarchy, following this excellent victory over Cornwall and Devon champions Hayle. Their reward will be a home tie against Drifters from Buckinghamshire who were crowned Southern Counties champions. The game will take place at the Portway ground on 17 March.

A surprising number of Wells supporters made the long trek to West Cornwall for this match and they soon were in full voice as Wells took the match to their opponents. In the first minute Ed Manders had gone close, but within five got the important opening try. Kicking ahead, he chased, harried the winger and fullback into errors and touched down. Still completely dominant a second try came from Jon Branch. Ash Hill and Robbie Wiseman were heavily involved before the winger raced away.

A sort of lethargy now came over the visitors allowing Hayle to gain some territory. For all their pressure however they were only able to get three points via a penalty.

Into the second half with Wells leading ten points to three, the lead was soon increased, John Branch made a big dent in the Hayle defence before Lewis Smith, with his dislocated finger strapped up, ran in for a try in the corner. Next Ed Manders and chased a long kick out of defence by Aaron Cook, again the error and Dave Wheatley following up hacked on and won the chase to touch down. Unfortunately he now limped off injured to be replaced by James Phillips. Hayle kept in touch with a converted try, but on fifty five minutes a text catch and drive at a lineout saw the veteran of the team, Rich Hickman score his third try of the season. Hayle again hit back with a try of their own, but with ten minutes remaining the outstanding Gavin Foster finished off a move to score. Aaron Cook and Jon Branch had added one conversion each to give the final total of thirty four.

On a big wide pitch it seemed surprising that Wells did not use the wide open spaces more a lot of the play was around the rucks and mauls and trying to punch holes through the middle. One cannot however argue with this tactic, the result is there for all to see. Stand out performers again many besides the try scorers. Robbie Wiseman and Lewis Cohen may not be the biggest of locks, but must surely be the hardest workers and schoolboy Matt McRae plays beyond his years.

DaveWheatley, Edd Manders, James Rowe, Alex Knight, Jon Branch, Aaron Cook, Jake Knight, Lewis Smith, Ash Hill, Richard Hickman, Lewis Cohen, Robbie Wiseman, Matt McRae, Gavin Foster, Ben Knight, Tom White, Sean Hegarty, Alex Simons, James Phillips and of course coach Pete Kennedy, congratulations, you have taken Wells Rugby Club to new heights.
This Saturday a league game at home against Taunton Seconds and on Sunday, Avon in the Somerset Vase again at home.
