Old Bristolians 34 – Wells 27

Three tries by club stalwart Al Knight in the last six minutes of the match helped Wells secure two points in their visit to Failand to play league leaders Old Bristolians.

The tone for this enjoyable and open game of rugby was set early on. The first time that the referee blew his whistle was in the fourth minute when the home team scored their first try which was converted. However, a once again much changed Wells team, soon hit back. Under Wells pressure a panic clearance fell into the hands of Brad Hibbert who roared over for a try wide out. Then a rather innocuous looking offence by Aaron Cook saw him Yellow Carded. The resultant penalty went over, but Wells defence was excellent for the next ten minutes and Old Bristolians could not add to their score.

Aaron Cooks return to the field saw Wells soon up the stakes and it was no surprise when the outside half slid a kick behind the defence for right winger Kieron Joyce to score his first senior try. Half time, ten points all.

The first six minutes of the second period were a disaster for the visitors. Three tries and two conversions took Old Bristolians up to twenty nine points. A further try ten minutes from the end seemed to spell to another pointless away trip for Wells, especially as they had six of their leading players absent. But the youngsters now playing in the team lead the fight back. Hooker Mason Brook grows with every game, Chris Tout is another front row stalwart. Charlie Willcox behind the scrum had a great game as did newcomer Lee Ibbotson and one stand out try saving tackle by Liam Blair remains in the mind.

So the game moved into the closing minutes, six minutes left Al Knight goes over. Four minutes later, over he goes again for the bonus point forth try, Aaron Cook adding the conversion which proved so critical. We are now into added on time, Wells have a lineout close to the home teams line. Catch and drive, it seemed that half of the Wells team piled in and it was centre Al Knight who broke away with the ball for try number five. The conversion missed, but who cares, Wells were within seven points and so grabbed the second point.

This was a great display by the depleted Wells team and should give them confidence going into the last game of the first half of the season when they entertain Bristol Saracens at The Portway Ground with a scheduled 2.15 kick off. The Seconds and Thirds are both away, the former travel to Chard to take on their Second team whilst the Thirds go to Crewkerne.
