Home sweet home!

Aaron Cook sliced through the defence for a try

Saturday 21 April 2018

Wells 41 – Winscombe 10

One could say that Wells finished their league season as they stated it. A bonus point win over local rivals Winscombe. A lot of water has fallen from the skies since those September days and going into the last month of the season, Wells still had the threat of relegation hanging over them. As it is they have finished in ninth place in the league with eleven wins from their twenty six games.

By far the biggest crowd of the season watched Winscombe get off to a flyer. An interception in the third minute led to a converted try. Wells were soon back on terms however. Fly half Aaron Cook sliced through the defence for a try he then converted. Al Payne finished off a move for his try after twenty minutes, Cook converted, Lewis Cohen, who seems to have become a try scoring machine, touched down, before the visitors put over a penalty. Cook then added a penalty of his own just before half time to leave Wells twenty two points to ten up at the interval.

The second half was completely dominated by Wells who seemed to relish playing on their Portway Ground for just the third time since Christmas. The half had hardly started before Oskar White crossed in the corner, Al Knight, who had also scored in the September game, got his try and Charlie Hiscox, who has only missed one game throughout the season, took a lovely reverse offload
to go in under the posts. Aaron Cook added two conversions and that was that.

Winscombe did have their moments, but the Wells defence has really hardened up as the season has progressed and only for short periods were they troubled. Probably not the most entertaining game of the season, but at least the sun was shining.

Wells RFC would like to thank James Stephen from Carter Jonas for the kind sponsorship of the pre-match lunch which was enjoyed by over eighty members and guest who also paid tribute to the late Eric Willmott, a former Club Chairman and Captain, who died recently.
